The Garda Commissioner has confirmed that he will "look into" the circumstances of the case of a Co Sligo stonemason who was arrested for larceny after he found a wallet containing $4,000 in cash and travellers' cheques and reported his find to the Garda.

Mr Martin Cadden, Ballydoogan, Mauheraboy, had sued the State for false imprisonment and slander. In the High Court on Tuesday he received compensation and an acknowledgment that he was entirely honest and above board.

Yesterday Mr Cadden said he believed the Garda Commissioner should conduct an internal Garda inquiry into his case to ensure that nobody else had to experience what he went through.
