An inquest into the death of a teenager who died after being struck with a baseball bat was adjourned today pending the outcome of criminal proceedings.

Rebekah Kiely died at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin two weeks after suffering massive head injuries.

The 15-year-old Junior Cert student, from Maple Avenue in Castleknock, was injured on November 10th, 2006 when a fight began between two men on the Old Navan Road.

She was struck by the bat during the row.

Both men were originally charged in relation to events which took place that night.

Gerard Farmer (47) of Phoenix Place, Castleknock, has since died. Several days before he was due to appear in court, he was found dead in his home at St Patrick's Park, Blanchardstown, from a suspected drugs overdose.

David Griffiths (43), of Phoenix Court, Castleknock, will appear before Dublin District Court to face one charge of assault on a man and a second public order offence.

Dublin city coroner Dr Brian Farrell told Rebekah Kiely's parents Angela and Maurice and her sister Blanaid that he had only been informed of the criminal proceedings this morning by gardaí.

"Six of my witnesses here today in relation to Rebekah's inquest have been requested to go to the District Court so I feel it would not be appropriate or proper for me to proceed with the inquest," he said.

"I only became aware of this this morning. I apologise to the family and witnesses who have come. I know a lot of Rebekah's friends have come as well," Dr Farrell said.

The inquest was adjourned until November 16th, when investigating gardaí will update the coroner on the District Court proceedings.
