Two released after baby dies in house fire

Two people who were arrested over the death of an eight month-old baby girl in a house fire in Co Fermanagh have been released without charge. A PSNI spokesman said they had been bailed pending further inquiries.

The man and woman were arrested yesterday following Saturday's fire in Enniskillen.

Claims of shots fired in Limerick

Gardaí in Limerick are investigating claims of a shooting in O'Malley Park at about 3pm yesterday when shots were reported fired by the occupants of one car towards another car.

Garda units searched the area but there was no sign of the vehicles involved. In a follow-up house search, a small quantity of ammunition was seized.

Man held over cannabis seizure

A man was arrested and detained for questioning at Killarney Garda station last night following the seizure of a large number of cannabis plants on a remote mountainside east of Killarney.

Up to 100 mature plants were discovered when gardaí arrived on the site in a remote area near Glenflesk about 10km from Killarney early yesterday.

The plants had an estimated street value of up to €80,000.

New director for Teagasc

The Agriculture and Food Development Authority, Teagasc, has appointed Prof Gerry Boyle as its new director.

Prof Boyle is an international consultant on agricultural policy with the World Bank. He is emeritus professor of economics at the National University of Ireland and has written several books.

He lives in Co Tipperary and is married with four children. He will take over from acting director Tom Kirley on October 1st.

Teagasc employs more than 1,500 people and operates eight research centres, eight colleges and a nationwide advisory service for the agriculture and food industry and rural communities.

Children and adult craft workshops

The National Print Museum in Haddington Road, Dublin, has announced details of a children's craft camp and an adult workshop later this month.

The batik workshop for adults takes place next weekend on August 11th and 12th. It costs €80. The craft camp for children aged from 7-12 years runs from August 13th-17th. Children will experiment with making paper, handmade books, calligraphy and batik. It costs €100. Further details and bookings are available by telephoning 01- 660 3770.
