Man found on roadside with serious injuries

GARDAÍ have launched an investigation after a man was found with serious head injuries at the side of a road. The man in his 50s is in a serious condition in hospital after he was discovered close to the Glendine Inn on the Castlecomer Road in Kilkenny City at about 4am yesterday.

The man was taken to St Luke’s Hospital in Kilkenny but was later transferred to Beaumont Hospital, Dublin. Insp Aidan Brennan of Kilkenny Garda station said gardaí are “concerned” for the man’s health and appealed to anyone with information in relation to the incident to contact them.

A section of the Kilkenny to Castlecomer road remained sealed off for technical examination yesterday but has since reopened to traffic. The man was discovered in a collapsed state by a passing taxi driver and was attended for a short time by two young men who gardaí are eager to talk to. “We are appealing to anyone who would have been in the vicinity of the Castlecomer road between 3.30am and 4.30am to contact gardaí at Kilkenny,” said Insp Brennan.

Charge for armed standoff in Cork

A 19-year-old man who was charged in connection with an armed standoff which led to members of the Armed Regional Support Unit being called to a house in Cork will appear before the District Court in the city again today.

The support unit was called in to the house on John Redmond Street in Cork city last Saturday night after two gardaí were confronted by a man with what appeared to be a handgun when they responded to a call for assistance.

On Sunday night at a late special sitting of Cork District Court, John O’Sullivan, John Redmond Street, Cork, was charged with two counts of threatening to kill contrary to section 5 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act of 1997. He was remanded in custody to Cork Prison.

Mr O’Sullivan was one of two men arrested following the incident which happened at about 11pm on Saturday night. The second man, who is in his 20s, has been released without charge. A file will be prepared for the DPP.

Future feminism conference at UCC

The position of women in Ireland and the impact of the current downturn from a woman’s perspective will be the focus of a conference taking place at University College Cork next Saturday. Hosted by UCC’s board of women’s studies, the conference, Irish Feminism and the Future, will also see the launch of a book by Ann Rossiter.

The keynote presentation will be jointly given by academic Ailbhe Smyth and journalist Therese Caherty. They recently established the Feminist Open Forum in Dublin.

The conference takes place in Brookfield Health and Sciences Building, UCC, 10am-4.30pm.
