Man found guilty of rape in van

A man has been convicted by a Central Criminal Court jury of kidnapping and raping a woman in his van after he met her outside a disco in the early hours of the morning.

James Cronin (23), Freemount, Rathmore, Co Kerry, was found guilty by the jury, on the 12th day of the trial, of raping and falsely imprisoning the woman on October 31st, 2004, in his van in a car park in a south Kerry town.

Mr Justice Henry Abbott remanded him in custody for sentence later and directed that he be registered as a sex offender. He also directed the preparation of a victim impact report.

Cronin denied in evidence that he committed the crimes and claimed they had consensual sex.

Redmond to be tried in November

A date in November has been set for the trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court of George Redmond. The former assistant city and county manger has pleaded not guilty to a corruption charge.

A second date to mention the case has been set in July to discuss the possibility of amending the charges faced by Mr Redmond.

Mr Redmond (81) has pleaded not guilty to receiving £10,000 between June 1st, 1985, and June 1st, 1986, as an inducement or reward in respect of a compulsory purchase order by Dublin City Council on 167 acres of land situated at Bussardstown and Coolmine.

Jury find man guilty of rape

A man has been convicted by a jury at the Central Criminal Court of anally raping a Limerick woman in 1999.

Peter Dolan (44), an English national from Wolverhampton, was certified as a registered sex offender by Mr Justice Paul Carney, who remanded him in custody for sentence later.

The jury also convicted Dolan of assaulting the woman causing her harm on the same occasion at a Dún Laoghaire hostel on March 13, 1999.

Two appeal dog fight conviction

The Court of Criminal Appeal has reserved judgment on an appeal by two men convicted of cruelty to animals at a dog fight in Co Kildare.

The case was believed to be the the first of its kind before the courts.

Troy Jordan (35), a car dealer and horse breeder, Allenwood South, Co Kildare, and David Deegan (32), a car sales business owner, Springfield, Tallaght, Co Dublin, were convicted at Naas Circuit Court on July 13th last year of cruelly ill-treating two animals at a dog fight on October 31st, 2003, at Brockagh, Robertstown, Co Kildare.

Jordan was jailed for 18 months for the offence and Deegan was given an 18-month suspended prison sentence by Judge Pat McCartan.
