Bodies of four Poles to begin journey home

The bodies of four Polish men killed in a car crash in Co Cork on Good Friday will begin their journey home today when a Polish undertaker will collect them at a Cork hospital.

Polish undertakers Apokalipsa have sent a special vehicle to collect the bodies at Cork University Hospital and bring them by ferry from Ringaskiddy to Britain and overland to Poland.

Sylwester Szczyrow (25), Andrzej Wojciechowski (27), Radoslaw Nowak (23) and Rafal Gorski (28), from Pisz, who l lived in Ballincollig, were killed when their car hit a truck in west Cork on Good Friday night.

The bodies will arrive home on Sunday and will be buried following Requiem Mass on Monday.

Meanwhile the Health Service Executive South has confirmed it has been in touch with the Polish Embassy and has pledged to help out with any shortfall in the €8,000 funding necessary to pay for the repatriation of the bodies.

Nuclear station for North ruled out

Northern Secretary Peter Hain has ruled out a nuclear power station being built in the North. As Derry councillors listened to a proposal yesterday from businessman Robert Andrews to build a plant in the city, Mr Hain rejected any notion that Northern Ireland would lose its status as a nuclear-free region.

A spokesman said: "The secretary of state has already made it clear that nuclear power is not going to happen in Northern Ireland.

Mr Andrews said the construction of a nuclear power plant in Derry would meet the North's energy needs and provide 500 stable jobs. - (PA)

Ahern looks at same-sex laws

The Taoiseach has signalled the Government is aiming to make significant progress on enacting legislation recognising same-sex couples before the election next year.

The Working Group on Domestic Partnership, chaired by Anne Colley, is expected to report in the autumn, after which the Government will make a decision and draft legislation, Mr Ahern said in an interview with the Gay Community News.

"Although we are operating with a tight timetable, it is our aim to make as much progress as possible on legislation to be enacted before the election next year," he told the magazine.

Three FG contest Cork S Central

Fine Gael activists in Cork South Central have selected three candidates to contest the five-seater for the party in the next general election.

Sitting TD and Munster MEP Simon Coveney will be joined on the ticket by lord mayor Deirdre Clune and councillor Jerry Buttimer.

Clonakilty gardaí search for man

Gardaí in west Cork have appealed to the public for information after a local man went missing in the area earlier this week.

Up to 120 people joined gardaí in a search yesterday for Michael O'Flynn (22), from Willsgrove, Enniskean, who was last seen leaving a disco at Clonakilty rugby club at about 2am on Monday. Mr O'Flynn is described as 178cm (5ft 10in), of athletic build.

Gardaí have asked land- owners to check their properties. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Clonakilty gardaí on 023 21570.
