It is a long time since former FF deputy for LongfordRoscommon Sean Doherty has been appointed to anything official. As Minister for Justice in 1982 he was involved in a series of controversies and was never out of the news; 10 years later his announcement, while Cathaoirleach of the Seanad, that Charles Haughey knew of certain phone tappings brought down the Haughey government. He has been more or less out in the cold in FF since. But this week he was appointed as one of the 11 temporary chairmen of the Dail who take the chair when the Ceann Comhairle Seamus Pattison or his deputy Rory O'Hanlon are not available. Others, nominated by their party leaders, are Ben Briscoe, Mary Coughlan, Denis Foley, Seamus Kirk, Des O'Malley, John Browne, Paul McGrath, Monica Barnes, Breda Moynihan-Cronin and Liz McManus.
