Newry City and Larne face expulsion from the Irish Cup after the ugly scenes that marred their tie on Saturday. The Irish Football Association has launched an investigation and could throw both sides out of the competition.

The PSNI are also reported to be studying evidence from the match, such was the intensity of the violence.

Newry were leading 2-1 with 10 minutes remaining when serious fighting broke out between players and coaching staff. Punches were traded while at least one player was kicked in the head while lying on the ground.

Two Larne players, Liam Hogan and Alan Reid, and the club’s manager, Paul Millar, were sent off before the fighting started.

With all hell breaking loose, referee Raymond Crangle abandoned the tie after 82 minutes.
