Delegates at the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (Ictu) national conference in Donegal have voted in favour of a motion against mandatory testing for alcohol in the workplace.
The motion, proposed by Guinness Staff Union, opposes mandatory testing but calls for the development of a national strategy on alcohol in the workplace.
The general secretary of the Guinness Staff Union, Sean MacKell, warned that workers subjected to mandatory testing could have their human rights abused.
Workers subjected to invasive tests could lose their jobs for having minuscule amounts of alcohol in their system, he said.
