The Labour Party's justice spokesman, Mr Brendan Howlin, has described the deportation of a failed Romanian asylum-seeker as evidence of the lunacy of Government policy. The man was working for Dublin Bus.

Mr Andrei Burlacu was deported last weekend after his application to remain in the State as a refugee was rejected. As one of a limited number of asylum-seekers allowed to seek employment, Mr Burlacu had been working for about a year as a driver for Dublin Bus. Mr Howlin said his party had asked for an amnesty for asylum-seekers resident in the State for more than a year, and for them to get priority in a proposed green-card work and residence system.
