A petrol-bomb was thrown at a house during disturbances in Mullingar, Co Westmeath last night.

Gardai said that a car was set on fire at a house in the Ennell Court area of the town at about 10pm, but no one was injured.

Men wearing balaclavas were said to have later launched a suspected petrol bomb attack which damaged a house in the Grange Park area just after 10pm.

The house was unoccupied at the time.

At 10.12pm a masked gang set a second vehicle alight at the Loughsheever Corporate Park.

Local councillor Jim Bourke appealed for an end to the violence, which has been linked to an ongoing feud in the town.

“The people in Mullingar are very concerned about the escalation of these attacks,” he said.

“I have been in contact with the local gardai and they have confirmed all is quiet a the moment and that they are monitoring the situation.”

But the Fianna Fail town councillor said the community feared lives may be lost or very serious and costly damage caused as a result of the continuing violence.
