Negotiations with about 12 heavily armed hijackers of an Afghanistan aircraft would be "very protracted, it could go on for days", said a senior policeman last night at Stansted airport outside London. Eight passengers from the plane were released yesterday, leaving an estimated 157 hostages on board.

Released hostages said the hijackers had "treated them well". The plane was hijacked in Kabul.
