Johnny Herbert has been recruited to help Audi's bid for a third successive victory in the Le Mans 24-Hour race this year.
Herbert, who retired from Formula One at the end of the 2000 season, will drive one of the factory-entered sportscars in the French endurance classic having driven a 'customer' Audi last year.
"I'm delighted Audi has given me another realistic opportunity to win what is arguably the world's toughest and most famous motor race," said Herbert, who won Le Mans in 1991 in a Mazda.
The Essex-born racer will team-up with the Italian duo of Rinaldo Capello and Christian Pescatori for the race on 15-16th June.
"Our aim is very ambitious," said Audi Head of Sport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich. "We want to win the Le Mans race for the third time in a row in order to finally get the historic trophy back to our factory in Ingolstadt."
The other Audi works team of former British Touring Car Champion Frank Biela, Tom Kristensen and Emanuele Pirro will bid to become the first unchanged driver combination to claim a Le Mans hat-trick.
Herbert, who won three grands prix during his long career, will make his debut for the two-car factory Audi squad in the Sebring 12-Hours on March 16th, the opening round of this year's ALMS championship in America.
It is also likely that Herbert will again team up with Andy Wallace in a Champion Racing 'customer' entered Audi R8 for the remaining ALMS races, having contested six rounds last year.
