Migraine treatment:
A drug traditionally used to treat high blood pressure has been found to be effective in preventing migraine attacks. Lisinopril was tested by Norwegian researchers on almost 50 patients with between two to six episodes of established migraine a month. They found that the number of hours of headache, the days with migraine and the severity of the attacks were all reduced by 20 per cent. There were few treatment side effects reported in this double-blind trial and placebo-controlled study. (British Medical Journal)
Syndrome support group:
GuillanBarre Syndrome is a collection of neurological symptoms affecting the peripheral nervous system. A UK support group for GuillanBarre Syndrome patients and friends is currently expanding its activities to the Republic. A meeting for patients, health professionals and anyone else with an interest in the condition will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 10th at the Ashling Hotel, Parkgate Street, Dublin 8. Searching for birth families:
Barnardo's Adoption Advice Service is holding an information evening for adopted or fostered people who are considering searching for their birth families. It takes place on Monday, February 5th from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Barnardo's, Christchurch Square, Dublin 8. Cost £5. Tel: 014530355.
Helpline volunteers:
