Comment from Elaine Burke:
Hi, I am an Irish person and live in Hackney beside St Johns church and Clarence rd. I have lived here for 10 years. Yesterday afternoon I heard police helicopters over my house and could smell burning. I walked around the area and saw people smashing in shop windows carrying out wide screen TV's. Many onlookers watching in silence. Lots of youths on bikes heading towards the action. Only a few police in the area. Overheard people on buses co-ordinating the riot operation - communicating on their phones as to where the action was. Clarence Rd and the Pembury estate was full of rioters. Riot police in full gear were to be seen surrounding the Pembury estate.
Today - it seemed calm. This morning when I walked along Mare street and all the shops were cleaned up and boarded. There seems to be a tension mounting now though - all the local shops are shutting up early anticipating a repeat of the disturbance this evening. I cannot hear police helicopters yet so hopefully that means that everything is ok for now. Lots of onlookers on the streets though and friends are being sent home early from work.
