Wales have made 10 changes for their decisive World Cup pool D match against Italy on Saturday with coach Steve Hansen dropping his entire front row and all but two of his backs.

Wales were unconvincing in their scrappy 27-20 win over Tonga last weekend and Hansen said his side would be beaten if they played the same way against the Italians.

Hansen has been sharing the workload among his squad, with six players making the World Cup debuts against Tonga, but has now settled on a mix of proven performers and rising young stars.

An erratic kicking display against Tonga appears to have cost flyhalf Stephen Jones a place in the starting side. Jones played his first test since August against Tonga but is on the bench, where he is joined by scrumhalf Gareth Cooper.

After a resourceful 25 minutes off the bench against Tonga, Dwayne Peel will start at scrumhalf inside Ceri Sweeney, who returns at stand off.

Rugby league convert Iestyn Harris retains his place at inside centre with Sonny Parker on his shoulder.

Harris and right winger Mark Jones are the only two backs to keep their places, with Kevin Morgan and Gareth Thomas back at fullback and left wing respectively.

In the pack, experienced hooker Robin McBryde returns but is joined in the front row by a pair of relative newcomers in props Adam Jones and Duncan Jones.

Adam Jones came off the bench against Tonga for his third cap, while Duncan Jones played in Wales's unspectacular 41-10 win over Canada 11 days ago.

Captain Colin Charvis reverts to his customary number eight in a revamped back row, with former skipper and British Lion Martyn Williams back in the starting side at openside flanker.

Williams proved an unlikely hero against Tonga, coming on as a replacement to kick his one and only test drop goal and score a try.

Australian-born Brent Cockbain returns for his third cap at lock alongside mainstay Gareth Llewellyn with Robert Sidoli dropped to the bench.

Italy meanwhile have been boosted by the return of captain and scrumhalf Alessandro Troncon from injury.

Italy struggled past Canada 19-14 on Tuesday to become the first Italian side ever to win two matches at a World Cup after they beat Tonga 36-12 last week. But the win came at a cost.

Winger Mirco Bergamasco suffered a broken cheekbone and lock Marco Bortolami a dislocated clavicle in a bruising match against Canada.

Italy coach John Kirwan has made four changes to the side that beat Canada calling in the experienced lock Carlo Checchinato, who is playing in his fourth World Cup, to replace Bortolami while lively winger Nicola Mazzucato returns to the right wing in Bergamasco's place after he was rested for the Canada game.

Inside centre Manuel Dallan has been replaced by Andrea Masi, who has recovered sufficiently from the badly bruised hip he suffered when he came on to replace Bergamasco against Canada.

Hooker Fabio Ongaro finds himself replaced by Carlo Festuccia and dropped the reserves bench after he was handed his second yellow card of the tournament against Canada.
