The radical Islamic movement Hamas has broken off talks with Palestinian prime minister Mahmud Abbas over a possible end to anti-Israeli attacks.

The group has instead called for massive demonstrations today to protest against the "dangerous results" of this week's peace summit in Jordan, which brought together Mr Abbas, Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon and US President George W. Bush.

At the summit on Wednesday, Mr Abbas said there was "no military solution to the conflict". He called for "peaceful means in the quest to end the occupation".

Hamas, its smaller rival, Islamic Jihad, and two secular radical groups have already announced in response that they will refuse to lay down their arms.
