Warsaw - Several hundred Roma gathered yesterday at the former Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi death camp in southern Poland to pay homage to Gypsies killed in the Holocaust, the PAP news agency reported.

The president of the Polish Senate, Ms Alicja Grzeskowiak, also took part in the ceremony held to ensure the genocide of the Roma community by the Nazis, along with Jews and Poles at Auschwitz, is never forgotten. Some 23,000 Roma were deported to the Zigeunerlager camp for Gypsies at Birkenau, where almost all were killed.
