FIANNA FAIL and the Progressive Democrats "will have to decide soon" if they will negotiate with the Green Party in the event of a hung Dail, the Greens' candidate in Dublin South East, Cllr John Gormley, has said.

He said the Greens had "huge difficulties with the Thatcherite policies advanced by the PDs", adding that Fianna Fail and the PDs were "hopelessly divided" on whether they would negotiate with the Greens.

"Bertie Ahern has made some token gestures of openness towards Green policies, whereas Mary Harney has indicated that she wouldn't even negotiate with us."

Cllr Gormley said Ms Harney's proposals on young single mothers were "seriously ill informed". He rejected the party's plans for privatisation and claimed "privatising the prison system could usher in a draconian regime".

Cllr Gormley stressed, however, that the Greens would be prepared to talk to all parties in a hung Dail.
