The State’s Government websites are the best in the EU, according to a survey by Politicsonline, a provider of online fundraising and internet tools for politics worldwide.

Ireland’s Dail and social ministries sites came first while the Taoiseach’s site was second. Ireland also won the overall award. Last year Ireland was ranked fourth overall.

The survey conducted in association with Amsterdam-Maastricht Summer University examined the websites of prime ministers, parliaments, and the economics and social affairs ministries of each of the fifteen EU member states.

"This study showed that the governments of the EU have taken the Internet seriously and are making a real effort to use it effectively," said PoliticsOnline President Phil Noble, one of the designers of the survey.

The survey said: "The top ranking of Ireland in 2 categories and the best overall proves that the Irish Republic has really become a key player of the e-government and e-politics issues".

Last month, a World Markets Research Centre (WMRC) survey found e-government facilities in Ireland to be the sixth best in the world.

In that survey the UK was ranked marginally ahead of Ireland but the Politicsonline survey rated the UK second to Ireland overall.
