INTEREST IS "high" in the east Belfast home of the late football legend George Best, the agents handling the sale have confirmed.

Number 16, Burren Way in Cregagh went on the market yesterday despite market conditions described as "slow".

However, an offer of £165,000 (€208,000) has already been made, matching the guide price.

The house is for sale following the death of George's father Dickie, who passed away last April.

The soccer star was raised in the house with his five brothers and sisters until he left for a bitter-sweet soccer career at the age of 15.

He died in 2005 and is buried a short distance away from the house alongside his mother Anne.

Those viewing the property can see the star's portrait hanging proudly on a living room wall, the bedroom which Best had as a teenager, as well as the back garden and the street where he first kicked a football.

A plaque recalling the footballer's greatness was unveiled at the house some time ago.

Best's sister Carol MacPherson said: "When we were very little, George and I used to share a bedroom.

"As we got older, he was given the room all to himself and after he left, it was used by other family members but was always vacated when George returned home to visit. It was always known as 'George's room' and our mum never let us forget that." The sale of the home was asked for in the late Dickie Best's will.

"Everyone is sad to see the house go," Ms McPherson told the BBC. "It was a very happy home and my father lived there for nearly 60 years."
