Gardaí are questioning two young men in Cork in relation to the death of Derek O¿Connell (27), whose badly beaten body was found close to Blackrock Castle in the city on Sunday.

Both men are being questioned under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at Blackrock Garda Station. They were arrested at the Ringmahon Road this morning and can be questioned for 12 hours.

The body of Mr O'Connell, from Ascension Heights, Knocknaheeny, Cork, was discovered near a remote walkway in the city.

He was last seen alive in the Mahon area on Sunday afternoon. Gardaí are appealing to the public for help as they piece together the dead man's final movements.

It is thought Mr O'Connell may have been living in Blackrock/Mahon area for the last few weeks.

Gardaí are treating the death as highly suspicious because the man's head had severe injuries which were not consistent with a fall. It is understood there were a number of visible injuries to the torso and head.

Supt Kieran McGann has urged members of the public who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the Mahon/Blackrock area on Sunday to contact the Garda at 021-4522000.
