Gardaí in Cork are investigating a serious sexual assault on a 19-year-old college student in the early hours of this morning.
The woman was set upon by her assailant, as she walked home along Magazine Road in Bishopstown shortly after 1am yesterday morning.
The victim was on her way home from studying at a friend's house when a man dragged her into a laneway and raped her and hit her repeatedly.
The victim flagged down a passing taxi after the man had fled the scene on foot.
She was taken to the sexual assault unit at the South Infirmary Hospital where she was treated for her injuries.
Gardaí have appealed to anyone who may have seen anybody acting suspiciously in the area to come forward.
