A Garda superintendent from the Cork division has been appointed to investigate a car crash in Co Kerry in which a man (30) was killed.

Martin McDonagh of Mussander Road, Coleraine, Co Derry was a front seat passenger in the car died when it crashed on a sharp bend shortly after 11.30 pm last night at Derreenacullig, Kilgarvan, Co Kerry.

A Garda patrol car had kept the Northern Ireland-registered car under observation from Kenmare, after Gardai received a number of reports it was driving dangerously. The Garda were following behind it when the crash took place.

Gardaí were attempting to bring the car to a stop when it crashed.

Superintendent Tom Duggan, from Kanturk in Co Cork, has been brought in to hold an inquiry into the death because of local Garda involvement.

The 45-year-old driver of the car was arrested in hospital where he was treated for minor injuries. He was questioned at Tralee Garda station on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death before being released tonight.

A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Two other people in the car were also injured and taken to hospital. One of them, a woman, was said to be stable at Cork University Hospital tonight.

The victim is the 355th person to die on Irish roads this year.
