Garda injured in Offaly truck hijacking

A Garda has been injured during an attempt to halt a hijacked truck in Co Offaly early this morning.

A Garda has been injured during an attempt to halt a hijacked truck in Co Offaly early this morning.

According to the Garda Press Office, the driver of the truck was making a delivery to a shop in Tullamore when it was hijacked.

The truck driver was locked in the rear of the vehicle. The  garda  was injured after trying to stop the truck at a checkpoint on Charleville Road at around 4.30am this morning.  It is understood he was carried on the bonnet of the lorry for half a mile before falling off.

The truck then carried on for some distance before crashing into a wall.

The officer  was taken to Tullamore General hospital, where his injuries are not said to be life-threatening.

A man (22) was chased by gardaí and arrested near the scene. He is being held at Tullamore Garda station under Section Four of the Criminal Justice Act.
