A garda who responded to a "strange call" that a naked man was en route to the man's girlfriend's flat with the intention of killing her has been awarded £6,740 compensation after being kicked and head-butted while arresting the man. Mr Justice Budd said in the High Court the injuries to Garda Michael Fitzgerald, of Kevin Street Garda station, were "indescribable".

Garda Fitzgerald said he was out of work for six weeks and in constant pain following an injury to his right testicle. He could not sleep at night and was unable to have normal relationships with his wife for six months.
