A senior Garda is to be charged with three public order offences following a row in a fast food restaurant in Co Tipperary.

A senior Garda is to be charged with three public order offences following a row in a fast food restaurant in Co Tipperary.

The Inspector was arrested in the early hours of Saturday morning following a disturbance at an Abrakebabra shop in Templemore.

It is understood he became abusive to staff when he paid €2 for sweets from a jelly bean dispenser. His cash got jammed in the machine and he did not get any sweets in return.

"We are confirming that we are investigating an incident involving a member of An Garda Siochána in Templemore," a Garda spokesman said.

The Inspector, believed to be based at Garda headquarters in Phoenix Park, Dublin, was arrested along with his wife and brother-in-law at around 2am. All three were taken to Templemore Garda Station and were released on bail.

It is understood the Inspector, who has around 30 years service in the force, is facing charges of being drunk, being drunk and disorderly and refusal to comply with instructions from gardaí on duty.

He is due to appear before Templemore District Court in September.
