The Naval Service has detained a French-registered fishing vessel off the Cork coast and has escorted it to Cobh.

The vessel, the Daou Pautred, was apprehended 80 miles south of Cork Harbour yesterday morning and was held for alleged failure to report attempted fishing in Irish waters and other technical offences. The detention was made by the LE Aoife.

So far this year the Naval Service has detained 19 vessels, and has sighted 1,380 vessels in Irish waters.

Of the 1,380, some 903 have been boarded for inspection and 130 have been given written warnings.
