England striker Robbie Fowler has been arrested by police in Leeds in relation to an alleged offence of criminal damage.

A Leeds police statement today said two unnamed men in their 20s were released after the incident just before midnight on Tuesday and were unlikely to be charged.

Leeds United chairman Peter Ridsdale said: "I have spoken to Robbie and I am satisfied that he was a completely innocent party to whatever happened. The club will be taking no further action."

The 26-year-old moved to Leeds United from Liverpool at the end of November for Stg£11 million.

Media reports said the incident happened after the Leeds Christmas party and involved a photographer who approached a taxi in which Fowler and a friend were travelling.

The Leeds police statement said: "Two men aged 25 and 26 were arrested in relation to an offence of criminal damage in Hunslet at 11.45 p.m. last night.

They were arrested and released. There is unlikely to be a charge."
