Br Reynolds said when it came to aftercare for boys who had been in Artane he "was not saying it was perfect". He was questioned at length about the practical use of a leaflet given each boy, from 1947, when he left Artane and its adequacy for life after the institution. The following are extracts from the leaflet:

Don't miss Mass on Sundays or Holydays of Obligation. Go regularly to Confession and Holy Communion. They will keep you straight and make you a man. Say a Rosary every night. It will keep Our Lady on you side.

Stick at your work. Don't change from one employer to another in a hurry. Don't allow yourself to get "fed up". Only useless people get "fed up". If for sufficient reason you want to change from your employer give me at least two weeks' notice and I shall help you to get another place.

Don't waste time. If you lose your job go after another one at once till you get one. A long time out of work will make you unfit for work. Take a pride in your work. You cannot be proud of work badly done.

Learn to be good-humoured and agreeable. You will then be acceptable to others. Don't be quarrelsome or grumbling. Try to acquire good manners. A book on Politeness will help. Don't become a slave to the "Pictures". Avoid liquor. You are well enough without it. Don't bet. You haven't a lot of money and you have better uses for it than betting.

Have respect for your own person and the persons of others. Your body has to put you into Heaven. Don't let it put you into Hell.

The only one who can make a man of you is yourself, and then only by God's help, for which you must pray daily. And make Our Lady your refuge at all times.
