An English tourist and his four children were rescued last night after getting lost while hill walking in west Cork.

The man contacted gardaí in Castletownbere by mobile phone at 5pm yesterday when the party got lost on steep ground between the Healy Pass and Hungry Hill at the Caha Mountains in Castletownbere.

Castletownbere Cliff Rescue Team and Kerry Mountain Rescue located the family shortly after 9pm after the father attracted their attention by using the flash in his camera.

A spokesman for Kerry Mountain Rescue said the hill walkers got in to difficulty when darkness fell at teatime yesterday.

"It got dark too early for them that is basically what happened. But thankfully they are ok. The children are fine - jut wet and cold and miserable. It has been a long, long night but thankfully they are all safe," the spokesman said.

Kerry Mountain Rescue has warned hill walkers to be particularly careful at this time of year after a spate of post-Christmas accidents in recent years.
