A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions after a man was questioned by gardaí today over the death of a 12-year-old boy in a fire at a den near the child's Dublin home almost five years ago.

The man (45) was released shortly before 7pm after being questioned for a number of hours at Blanchardstown Garda Station in Dublin in connection with the death of Stephen Hughes.

The 12-year-old died in a fire in a makeshift den near his Tallaght home in 2001. He was sleeping with a friend in the makeshift children's den, which was in an alley between a derelict shop and a house, at Rossfield Avenue.

At the time, gardaí said the fire started at around 5.20am on Saturday morning, September 1st, 2001.

His mother, Elizabeth, was asked by her son the evening before the fire if he could stay with relatives that night. The family had no idea he was sleeping in the hut.

Stephen's family have been calling for further investigation into the death. CCTV footage was replayed on television around the first anniversary of his death in 2002 in the hope of jogging witnesses' memories.
