Fine Gael has criticised Bus Eireann for declining its request to have six school buses independently checked to establish the safety and road-worthiness. The party's enterprise spokesman, Mr Jim Higgins TD, said he will ask the Minister for Education to allow him to choose six buses to be independently checked.

A spokesman for Bus Eireann said their buses go to vehicle test centres which are "independently audited by the Department of the Environment on a regular basis to confirm that specified procedures and standards are being adhered to. I don't see why anybody should override the vehicle testing regime which is operated by the Department," he said.
