A leading Fianna Fail Party official in the Cavan-Monaghan constituency has resigned because the National Executive refused to ratify his selection as a party candidate in the next general election.

Last night, Fianna Fail sources in the constituency said it was likely Mr Benny Kieran might run in the general election on an Independent Fianna Fail ticket with the support of a number of cumainn in his area.

Mr Kieran defeated Mr Robert Gallagher, a Monaghan UDC member.
