A Malaysian shopkeeper and his 10-year-old son suffered severe burns when a mystery attacker splashed them with kerosene and threw a match at them, police said today.

Mr Yap Kok Seng (43) sustained 70 per cent burns on several parts of his body and his son Jit Chek, 40 per cent burns on both feet after last nights attack at Bandar Batu Anam near Segamat in the southern state of Johor.

Segamat police chief Mr Mohamad Hazam Abdul Halim said both were in stable condition in hospital.

Mr Mohamad Hazam, quoted by Bernama news agency, said the attack happened as the father and son were closing their mini-mart.

"When both bent down to wash their hands outside the shop, two men arrived on a motorcycle and one of them suddenly splashed kerosene from an open plastic container on them," he said.

The man threw a match and sped off on the motorbike.

Police said they were trying to establish a motive. The victim could give no reason for the attack.
