A family public house, closed for the first time in over 100 years by landslides last month, is back in business this weekend following the all-clear from Mayo County Council.

McGrath's pub in Pollathomas was one of six occupied properties taken out of the "high risk" category yesterday by the local authority. There had previously been 14 families in the high-risk sector. The old and new cemeteries at Pollathomas have been designated "medium risk" which means it is safe to visit there.

The latest evaluation by geological experts means that eight families cannot return to their homes. There are a further four unoccupied homes in the high-risk zone, according to Mr Peter Hynes, director of services with Mayo County Council. He hopes to have a full report and costings in about 10 days.

The cost of the damage is estimated to be in the region of €3 million. The Dooncarton Landslide Committee has expressed disappointment that not a "penny" compensation or emergency aid has been forthcoming for the landslide victims so far.
