The family of Mr Ronan McLoughlin, the dissident IRA member shot dead during an alleged attempted robbery in Ashford, Co Wicklow, have repeated their demand for a public inquiry into the circumstances of Friday's shooting.

The Alliance Party has also expressed concern about the incident and Republican Sinn Fein has called for a public inquiry.

In a statement yesterday, the McLoughlins, of Ballymun, Dublin, asked why, if the six men were under surveillance, no attempt was made to arrest them on their way to the scene or at the scene before the shooting.

The Alliance president, Dr Philip McGarry, said it was "very disturbing" that the initial Garda statement that the men had opened fire on them was wrong. "Alliance believes it to be imperative that, at all times, the actions of the security forces, North and South, are of the highest standard. In any situation in which the security forces kill a person, particularly when they fire first, the public is entitled to a thorough investigation and explanation."
