The Irish team manager Mick McCarthy has informed the FAI that following a team meeting today in Saipan that he has requested Roy Keane to leave the squad and return home.

The meeting was attended by the entire playing squad and coaching staff.

We understand the consensus of the meeting was that Roy Keane’s recent remarks were totally unacceptable.

It is also understood that Roy’s response on the matter to the manager was considered objectionable.

The association views these events with great regret.

The decision of the manager in this matter is fully supported by the association.

The primary concern of the FAI is the well-being of the entire squad of Irish players. The FAI has made every effort to provide the best facilities for Mick McCarthy and his squad.

The president of the FAI, Mr Milo Corcoran stated: "We must put this unfortunate affair behind us and get on with the job in hand in the best interests of Irish soccer and its loyal supporters."
