A Eurofighter prototype being developed by European aerospace giant EADS crashed today near the central Spanish town of Toledo, a Defence Ministry spokesman said.

"Fortunately both pilots ejected from the plane," the spokesman said. "There was no human damage of any kind."

The official could not provide any explanation for the crash. He said he believed it to be the first accident of its kind during Eurofighter testing.

The plane fell in the countryside near the village of Belvis de la Jarra.

The consortium which is building the Eurofighter is made upof EADS, Britain's BAE Systems and Italy's Finmeccanica.
