Brussels - Fears that the world's five big record companies operate an illegal cartel to keep compact disc prices artificially high have prompted the European Commission to investigate, it emerged yesterday.

Although Brussels admits that it has so far failed to find firm evidence that Europeans are paying far too much for their CDs, it strongly believes that there is more than enough circumstantial evidence to warrant a full inquiry.
