A convicted murderer who escaped from Mountjoy Prison three weeks ago returned voluntarily yesterday. Mr Stephen Rock (33), of Bluebell Road, Inchicore, Dublin, was serving a life sentence for the murder of a neighbour in June 1988.

Classified as a low-risk, "trusty" prisoner, he absconded while working outside the prison gate.

It is understood his mother accompanied him on his return yesterday. A spokesman for the Department of Justice said an investigation into the escape was still ongoing.
