Eight people have been arrested in Co Mayo following an incident at the Shell compound in Glengad earlier today.
Seven men and one woman were detained for public order and trespass charges after protesters attempted to breach the fence surrounding the compund, at about 5.30pm .
Gardaí said more than 100 protesters arrived at the site and attempted to gain entry to the compund through security fencing using improvised equipment.
Gardai who were on duty in the area, backed up by the Public Order Unit, arrested the eight, who are now being detained at Ballina Garda station.
