Eight people were killed, including six Islamic militants, and six children injured in incidents across northern Algeria since Friday, local newspapers reported today.

Security forces killed six Islamic militants in clashes on Friday in a mountainous area near the northern coastal city of Jijel, 300km east of the capital Algiers, the El Khabar newspaper said.

Also on Friday, a shepherd was killed by unidentified armed assailants near Chlef, 200km west of Algiers, according to Er-Rai.

An elderly man was killed yesterday in Batna, 430km southeast of Algiers, several newspapers reported.

Six children aged eight to 12 were injured Friday when a bomb exploded in Ouled Aouat, near Jijel, El Khabar said.

The latest deaths brought to 60 the number of people killed in Algeria since the start of the month, according to a toll compiled from official sources and press reports.

More than 150,000 people - mostly civilians - have been killed since a Muslim fundamentalist insurgency broke out in the north African country in 1992.
