Reading Association of Ireland Conference

"Learning to Read, Reading to Learn" is the theme of this year's conference, which is taking place in St Patrick's College, Drumcondra, Dublin from Thursday, September 23rd to Saturday, 25th.

Among the speakers are Dr Mark Morgan, who will talk on "Reading to Learn: A major social issue" and Dr Eve Bearne, who will speak on raising the literacy achievement of boys.

Primary School Competition on Disability

Primary school students are being invited to join in Ireland's National Information Day on Disability 2004, by writing a short story entitled 'Someone like me'.

The essay-writing competition is designed to promote disability awareness among primary-school children and is an initiative of the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform with a prize fund of over €60,000.

Primary-school students are invited to compose an essay/short story of no more than 200 words or an audio entry of less than five minutes duration. The content of the essay/audio entry should identify the common interests, hobbies, activities, emotions and abilities shared by people with disabilities and people without disabilities or some similar theme.

Entry is restricted to one per school and the closing date for receipt of entries is Friday, October 22nd. Each county will have a winner and will receive €2,000 worth of computer/audio-visual equipment and €200 in vouchers for the pupil.

The overall winner receives €10,000 worth of equipment for their school and a €500 voucher. The overall winner will be announced in December .

Euroweek is an annual meeting of teachers and students from 14 different countries in the European Union. Euroweek 2004 is being held in Dublin, from September 25th to October 3rd, inclusive, and Pobalscoil Rosmini in Drumcondra, Dublin is responsible for the programme of events.
