Running from 9 a.m. until 3.30 p.m. academic staff will be there to answer queries and provide detailed subject and course information. Music from uilleann pipes and fiddles will feature in a series of lunchtime recitals to be held in the Central Library in the Ilac Centre mid-week during October. Admission is free and all are welcome to the concerts courtesy of Dublin Corporation Public Libraries in association with Na Piobairi Uilleann. Tomorrow, Kevin Glackin on fiddle and Sean Potts on uilleann pipes will play at 1 p.m. The next week on Wednesday at the same time, the music of Conor Byrne on flute and Gabriel McKeon on uilleann pipes will feature and on the final Wednesday, music from Oisin Mac Diarmada on fiddle and Mikie Smyth on uilleann pipes will waft through the library.

Music students will have received information about an up-coming ASTI millennium project, which is called A celebration of music in our schools. Now in its third year, the project provides students with an opportunity to perform in public, with the emphasis on participation rather than on competing. Group and individual performances will be staged, all performing in a range of mediums including jazz, rock, traditional, classical and folk. Five regional performances will take place in centres in Dublin, Sligo, Galway, Cork and Kilkenny. The best performances will be selected form these regional concerts to perform in a gala concert in the University of Limerick on Sunday, March 5th next year.

Primary school students who are interested in winning a trip to Paris and £2,000 for their school may like to enter the annual Le Crunch French Apple a competition. Interested classes are invited to register before Monday, November 1st. Registration forms and posters have been sent to all primary schools; however a pack is avialable from Juliette O'Connor in Sopexa, at (01) 661 4230 or fax (01) 661 2588. Entrants must subject proposals including a project idea and an outline programme of events for a Le Crunch French Apple open day.

The Cork Film Festival opened at the start of the week and its education programme started yesterday with a screening of Walt Disney's at 11 a.m. at the city's multiplex Gate Cinema on North Main Street. Today's screenings include the Irish The White Pony, the British Ratcatcher and the US The Basket. Tomorrow's offerings for students include the American US film Gas, Food and Lodging ; the British production of and the Irish/French production Le Dernier Mot . The festival runs until Sunday, 17th.
