An Ecuadorean airplane with 92 people on board was declared missing today after it lost contact with air traffic control on its way to the northern city of Tulcan, aviation authorities said.

The Boeing 727 took off from Quito's airport at 4.23 p.m. Irish time and travelled toward Tulcan, a city located on Ecuador's border with Colombia, the Civil Aviation Office said in a statement.

Seven crew members, a mechanic, an operations technician and 83 passengers were on board Ecuadorean state airline Tame's flight 120, the authorities said.

Tame spokeswoman Toa Quirola said the flight between Quito and Tulcan should take between 30 and 40 minutes.
