Building society EBS posted strong results for 2006 as it reached a record level of lending.

The financial institution doled out €4.6 billion in gross lending, while customer funding was also up, by some 15 per cent.

Operating profit before tax rose by 23 per cent, reaching €65.9 million for the year, while profit after tax totalled €57.7 million, a 49 per cent rise on the year before.

EBS's growth in the residential mortgage market outstripped that of the average market, with the building society notching up 18 growth versus the market average of 16.9 per cent.

Savings balances at EBS rose 15 per cent, as significant levels of matured SSIA funds remained in its coffers.

The building society also announced it was in talks with Britain's Britannia Building Society to offer services in the Irish mortgage broker market.
