THE Riverrun Consortium has been selected to prepare a master plan for the Dublin docklands area of about 1,300 acres on both sides of the river Liffey.

The area includes the Custom House Docks Area and East Wall on the north side and Pearse Street, Ringsend and Irishtown on the south.

The Riverrun Consortium is an alliance of Irish professionals which formed to bid for the contract. It is led by Mr Sean O'Laoire, the architect and urban designer.

Mr Gerry Kelly, employment and training director of the Custom House Docks Development Authority (CHDDA), said they had received 17 submissions since proposals were invited and Riverrun Consortium was chosen from a short list of seven.

The master plan is intended to form the basis for the development over a 15 year period. The area includes extensive waterways, which could be exploited for tourism and leisure activities, and there is also potential for industrial and office use.

The social objective of the plan is to "breathe new life into communities which have suffered from the decline in traditional port related activities".
