The driver of an articulated lorry which ended up embedded in the front garden of a cottage last April after suddenly veering off the N84 Castlebar to Ballinrobe road in Co Mayo suffered a fatal heart attack, an inquest was told yesterday.

The inquest into the death of Joseph Sheerin (59) from Clonmellon, Co Westmeath, was conducted by the coroner for south Mayo, John O’Dwyer.

Helen Grant, who lives in the cottage with her partner, told the inquest that she had heard a “strange, loud sound” outside the house on April 30th

She went out to investigate and found a lorry in the front garden with the driver slumped over the steering wheel.
