A DUBLIN bus driver was unhurt yesterday when his double decker bus crashed through railings and fell down a 15-20 ft embankment into the River Dodder at Donnybrook.

The accident occurred at around 7.20 a.m. when the driver, who is in his 50s, was bringing his number Ii bus from Donnybrook garage to Clonskeagh to begin his shift.

While attempting to get past a Dublin Corporation drainage truck, which was parked in the middle of Beaver Row just down from the garage entrance, the driver revved up to get the bus onto the relatively high footpath.

The bus crashed through a railing and toppled down the embankment, according to a Dublin Bus spokesman. The driver was able to walk away from the scene. Apart from shock and a few scratches, he was uninjured.

The bus, a green Bombardier, was badly damaged and it is likely it will be scrapped. The bus was scheduled to be scrapped in the next year or two as part of the Dublin Bus plan to replace all their Bombardier buses with £160,000 Volvo Olympians.
